Set Intentions, Not Resolutions in 2020
A new year is almost here, and your first impulse may be to start setting resolutions: lose 10 pounds, save more money, make more meals at home. While we are all about setting goals at The Bar Method, resolutions may not be the best way for you to make 2020 your year. Instead, we suggest you set intentions for 2020. Resolutions set a goal for the future, with no strategy as to how these goals will be achieved. Intentions focus on the present. When setting intentions, you are putting your energy and power into your present self and focus on the journey of achieving a better version of yourself. Keep reading for a few tips on setting intentions in 2020:
Start with self-reflection
What is most important to you? What are your priorities and passions? Before setting intentions, reflect on who you are to determine where you are, where you want to be, and why that is important to you. Setting meaningful intentions are far more likely to come to fruition than a resolution that insinuates you are not enough as you are.
What’s your mantra?
Once you have a list of priorities and passions, turn each of these items into a statement or mantra. For example, if one of the things you wrote down is your family, rather than setting a resolution to visit your parents every week, you can set the intention to cherish & show gratitude for your relationships with family. If one of your priorities is to stay healthy, rather than setting a resolution to lose 10 pounds, you can set the intention to practice self-care through exercise. Write down each mantra and use this to remind yourself of your intentions each day in 2020.
Create a vision board
We don’t know about you, but we are far more likely to follow our intentions if they are displayed on a beautiful vision board in our home or office. Go through a few magazines and find words or images that remind you of the mantras you have set for the new year. This will serve as a beautiful daily reminder of where you are headed and how today’s actions can get you there.
Control your thoughts
As the new year begins and you work towards bringing your intentions to manifestation, control the thoughts that creep into your head. Remind yourself of your intentions each morning, let it sink in, and go about your day. Do not let negative thoughts find their way to your mind. This is a process. We all have bad days, but you must aim to remain positive and focus on the present, rather than what you have not achieved.
